Twenty

The werejaguar lunges into the air, and I try to use my wind to keep him hovering in place there, but he’s too fast or else my wind is too weak. I have been using a lot of magic lately, with all of the illusions and the wind.

Darius waves his hands in the air, conjuring arcane powers, making a streak of it, no, a wall that erects between Rkyer and his uncle. When the werejaguar hits against the wall, he bounces back and howls. I wince, hating the sound, but what choice do we have? We have to protect ourselves, but I would prefer we do it in a way that doesn’t cause him any harm.

Kayden changes into the massive tree-like being all spriggan can turn into.

Ronald gasps and sinks into the couch, his mouth agape.

“Stay out of the way,” I warn him, conjuring small balls of arcane energy.

Rkyer’s smart. He’s trying to find the edge of the arcane-energized wall, and he’s moving faster than Darius can create it. I try to help, but soon, the werejaguar will reach the end and be free.

Wait, no, he’s backing up, getting ready to jump over it. I can tell because he’s lowering his front end, eyeing the shimmering, purplish, translucent wall.

Rkyer jumps, and from deep inside, I manage to produce enough wind that I blast him back, straight back toward Kayden, who wraps his branch-like arms around the werejaguar’s neck, subduing him.

Like a savage, feral animal, Rkyer squirms and kicks, but his back is to Kayden, and he can’t get much purchase. He lifts his head to try to lower it into a better position to attempt to bite Kayden’s arms, but that allows Kayden to better fit his arm against Rkyer’s neck. He crushes, using his other arm to pull the first one tighter, and gradually, the werejaguar’s movements slow, his attempts to struggle his way free futile.

Rkyer slumps in Kayden’s arms. The sight makes me want to weep, but then, as Kayden sinks down to sit with the werejaguar, the animal’s form glows, and Rkyer returns, his face slightly red, unconscious once more.

This time, only for a moment. Rkyer groans and blinks, sitting up and pushing away from Kayden, who glances at me. I think he’s wondering if it’s safe to revert out of the tree form. Absurdly, I wonder if there’s a name for it. Most likely, but that doesn’t matter right now.

Rkyer shakily stands, a hand rubbing his throat. There are faint, impressions from the twigs sticking out of Kayden’s branch-like arms against Rkyer’s neck, but he doesn’t seem concerned about that.

I nod to Darius, and the arcane wall comes down. Even though he should have been able to see his uncle through it, Rkyer gasps and staggers back as if hit in the stomach, all the air rushing out of him. His red face pales as he gazes at his unharmed but cowering uncle.

With fury in his eyes, Rkyer glowers at me. “Why did you bring me here?” He doesn’t shout the question, but the quiet intensity is even worse.
